The Essence of Orange County Design

Orange County’s design scene is a melting pot of styles, influenced by its diverse population and scenic landscapes. The essence of design in this region can be captured in a few key elements:

  1. Coastal Influence: Proximity to the Pacific Ocean means that many designs incorporate elements of coastal living. This includes the use of light, airy colors, natural materials like wood and stone, and an emphasis on creating open, breezy spaces that invite the outdoors in.

  2. Modern Californian Chic: This style blends contemporary design with a relaxed, laid-back aesthetic. Clean lines, minimalistic decor, and functional spaces are key features, often complemented by bold art pieces and innovative lighting solutions.

  3. Sustainability: There’s a growing emphasis on sustainable design practices in Orange County. From using eco-friendly materials to incorporating energy-efficient technologies, designers in the area are committed to creating beautiful spaces that are also kind to the environment.

Iconic Design Districts

Orange County boasts several districts known for their distinctive design offerings:

  • Laguna Beach: Known for its vibrant arts scene, Laguna Beach is home to numerous galleries, boutique shops, and design studios. The area is a treasure trove for those seeking unique art pieces, custom furniture, and innovative design ideas. Tuvalu Home is one of my favorite coastal inspired home and gift stores, located in the heart of Laguna Beach.

  • Costa Mesa: Often referred to as the cultural center of Orange County, Costa Mesa is renowned for its cutting-edge architecture and interior design. The South Coast Plaza, for instance, is a premier shopping destination featuring high-end design stores and showrooms - but my favorite stop is SOCO featuring unique home design stores including Coco Republic, Visual Comfort and Ann Sacks.

  • Newport Beach: This affluent area combines luxury with sophistication. Design in Newport Beach often features elegant, high-end finishes, bespoke furniture, and meticulously curated decor, reflecting the area’s upscale vibe. Explore Shoppe Amber Interiors, Le Labo and Serena & Lily at Lido Marina Village, or head South down PCH to make a stop at Roger's Gardens where you can dine and shop, all located in Newport Beach, California.

Trends in Orange County Design

Keeping up with design trends is crucial for staying ahead in the ever-evolving world of interior and architectural design. Here are some trends currently making waves in Orange County:

  • Indoor-Outdoor Living: Given the favorable climate, many homes and commercial spaces in #OrangeCounty seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living areas. Large sliding doors, outdoor kitchens, and patio spaces are popular features.

  • Smart Homes: Integration of smart technology is a growing trend, with homeowners seeking to enhance convenience, security, and energy efficiency through smart home systems.

  • Natural Materials: There’s a strong preference for natural materials such as reclaimed wood, stone, and organic fabrics. These elements add warmth and texture to spaces, creating a connection with nature.
